Risk Assessment

The biggest risk to consider in the outdoor location is that it is highly likely to snow before or even during filming. This creates two problems,
  • Massive drop in temperature and the risk of more slippery surfaces. To avoid discomfort or injury, all cast and crew should dress themselves appropriately for extremely cold weather and bring some kind of hot food and/or beverage. Considered as a relatively low risk because it is likely that everyone will already be dressed appropriately and we are only a short walk away from the indoor location if anyone has a problem.
  • Slippery surfaces, this problem can be avoided if all cast and crew pay attention to their surroundings, tread carefully and most importantly wear practical footwear. I would consider this a low risk because the area is much less dangerous for someone to fall in as any paved road or high street pavement. If anyone were to occur any damage by falling, a first aid kit will be on set to treat any wounds as best as possible until professional help is available.
It is possible that an open fire will be included in our film, this presents a problem itself

  • An open fire could burn someone or set something on fire if there was a mistake by any one of crew or cast. I would consider the idea of an open fire moderately dangerous because we will be constructing under safe guidelines in an area that will be either damp with rain or covered in snow so there are small risks of anything catching fire. For someone to be hurt by the fire of such small size, they would have to intentionally put themselves in the way of it which would then make it high unlikely. However, if anyone were to burn themselves somehow, a first aid kit will be ready on set to clean and dress any burns until they can be professionally tended to.
It can be tempting to consume alcohol on set under the false notion that it warms a persons body in the cold, this creates a few problems.

  • Alcohol is highly flammable, to have large amounts of it around an open fire can cause considerable risk to everyone part of the filming and anyone caught in a potential fire spread. To not have alcohol will completely rid this problem.
  • Alcohol can blur a persons judgement, all risks listed here are elevated considerably if someone decides to drink large amounts of it. Again, not having it on set will rid this problem.
  • Alcohol, despite what is commonly believed, lowers a persons overall body temperature. The combination of a lowered temperature and blurred judgement could mean that by the time somebody realises that they feel considerably cold, it can already be dangerous. Not having alcohol will rid this problem.
The second location, the indoor flashback scene being in a normal house and no particularily dangerous things included, means very little danger is there.

Preliminary Task

This is my Preliminary task. As a group we had to film a character walking from one side of the door, to the other side where they then sit down and engage in a conversation with another character. This meant that dialogue had to be present in our piece of work.
We were also given a challenge which we had to include, this is known as  the 180 degree rule.

This is a rule which was created so that when there are two characters present within a scene were to look as though they had a good relationship with the camera from left and right. The camera was not allowed to go on to the oposite side of the semi-circle as this wouldnt keep the same effect throughout the scene. If this did happen, then it wouldnt keep the story running smoothly and it would create some confusion to the audience.
This rule was based on keeping the eye - to - eye matching at all time, which was to be done in every shot that was taken so that it always looked as though we were enaged in a conversation and not to someone else who wasnt in the scene.
As i was one of the characters that was present in the filiming of our Perliminary Task, there were a few things in which i found hard.
What i found hard about the Preliminary Task
Was that as i was one of the characters who appeared in it, it was very hard to try and improvise what i was to say, as having dialogue was compulsory. Also what i found hard was trying to make my eyes look as though they were always in the right direction for each shot it consists of.
What i liked about the Perliminary Task
However what i found enjoyable was that it showed me i was able to work we within a team, as well as coming up with good ideas that could have been used. This showed that i could be creative and helpful when i am needed not just for my own benefit but for the group that i was in. I was also able to have while filming which made me more relaxed when it came to actually shooting the specific shots of myself.

Preliminary Task

Posted By ANETA

We have been asked to work as a group of four people in order to produce a piece of work which was called preliminary task. We had to come up with an idea of approximately 2 minutes sequence of someone being filmed coming through the door and walking across the room to sit down. There was not a lot of dialogue used as you are able to see while you are watching the clip above. This task taught me of how to work with a group of people and teach me new media skills that were very useful later on when producing my final piece especially with the acting because as you can see I was one of the actors in this clip. However, there were some ups and downs such as: time management, the use of the camera (as this was only the second time we were able to use the equipment), lighting the characters in the clip and setting everything up so that we were able to use them. I think this experience was very useful as it taught me new things and made me realise how working with the camera is very important in order to know how to use it correctly so it reflects well on my final piece. Overall, i got to experience with different things and i learnt a lot that i put in to use while i filmed some of my final movie for my coursework, which was also working as a group task.
The 180° rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters which in this task it took place where me (Aneta) and the other character (Simona) was sitting opposite eachother behind the table looking at each other and as a task we had to include a short dialogue which we had to come up with as a group. The rule was used once but for a little while which shows that the characters are talking to eachother and keeping the eye line in place.

Final Piece (LONG WINTER)

This is the final piece called Long Winter that we have produced. We have been working on it for the past few months and we hope that you will enjoy it while watching it.

The editing of the movie has been done by Amanda Cornhill in order to create the meaning so it easier for the audience the understand the movie and to make the movie look a lot better.
The sound has been done by Aneta Lopuszynska the purpose of this was to give an extra meaning to the movie and create some sort of the atmosphere so when watching it its easier to understand the genre and everything that links with it.

Test Shoot

This is the test shoot that we have produced as a group. This was so that we were able to test the equipment that we were going to be using during our actual final filiming, as well as  checking whether the actors were good enough to use when we were to do our actual filming. As  you will be able to see the location is different comparing to the one we have used for our final piece because we have decided that the location was too far away for us to travel with our equiment and therefore we had to change it. Also you can see the picture is very dark because we have filmed it late in the evening (around 8 pm), due to thinking that by having this effect it would suit the genre better. However, it didn't work out too well so we realised what mistakes we had made and decided that we need to improve and come up with a better way of filiming our actual shoot in order for our movie to be good and successful. There are some positive points that can be pointed out such as:
  • we were able to get a use of how to use the camera correctly
  • see what angles looked good when filming to keep the story interesting
  • What lighting we could use
  • How well we communicated as a group with not just ourselves but with the people we took on to be our actors, using the skills that we already had.

Animatic

Above is our animatic that we have designed for our 2 minutes opening sequence. We have used colouring pencils and some plane paper to draw the story shot - by shot and then we took some pictures of it and edited on the computer. The animatic was there to help us understand the story clearly and also to know how to start filming the movie so we know what order everything goes in. Some changes were made and not everything was applied according to the animatic. This is because we changed the number of actors from a big group to only a few people as it would be a lot clearer, we also changed the location as it was much more easier to travel somewhere that was local and we all knew quite well. This meant that we felt as though it we had made the right decisions to make our movie as successful as possible. The animatic was very helpful for us as we knew where to start and what to film first and how long each scene will last for. The animatic was there to help us start off with our 2 minutes opening and as you can see we have used different camera angles to demonstrate different things and also to show the main character in different situations.

Location Description and Still Pictures

Feltham is where we decided to do our filming for the whole 2 minute opening scene this location  was close to the cast and crew, this meant that it was more efficient and very easy to get to as everyone knew the area quite well, easily tracking where we needed to go to commence the filming.

Run down, burnt shed, list is the main setting for our movie, we choose to do it in this sort of environment because we felt that it created the sort of atmosphere that we wanted to achieve, which was intense and fearful place. We also choose to do it here, this because as you can see it is very hidden and deserted which is what we need to bring across to show that this man is trying to survive and trying his best to stay well out of the way of any danger.

Living Room in Alex's house (who plays our main character). We used this for our flashback because we wanted to give the impression of being relaxed and enjoying each others company which would add some sort of romantic element to our intense thriller genre. Also by having the flashback in a house, it shows the audience that there has been a jump in location between where he is located now (abandoned shelter), to where he use to have as his safe protected place (home).

Make up and Costume Research

Scene 1.

Props
  • Candles to create the romantic mood and provide ambient lighting for the scene.
Clothing
  • Clothing consists only of casual wear for Alex and Amanda.
The scene being as short as it is and being set in a normal house, not many props are required other than what is already there.

Scene 2.

Props.
  • Run Down Shed, set up in the camping area. This will be there Alex is sitting as his hide out so keep himself hidden from the Cannibal Attackers.
  • Torch, Not used for extra light as it will be shot during the day time. Just to be used as a prop used within the scene.
  • Old broken Television. Alex will be sitting on this object when he is looking at the Old Weathered Photo.
  • Old Weathered Photo Alex's girlfriend (Amanda Cornhill), taken of her as a memory so he can remember her by. Dirtied and ripped, the photo is made to look significantly old.
  • Air Riffle, As a prop to show that he is protecting himself against any attacks  that happen.
  • Old and Empty Food Cans placed around the campsite to give the impression of scavenging and survival.
  • A hammer, used by the cannibal to give impression that  he is dangerous when it  is coming to attacking people.
Clothing.

All of the characters will have assorted costume consisting of,
  • Comfortable foot wear (trainers) used so that he is able to run away if there is any danger present.
  • Camouflage Jeans. Dirtied and scruffy to show that they have been used for a long time.
  • Large Jackets and/or Jumpers with hoods attached, also dirtied and weathered for the same effect.
  • Scarf to show that he is trying to hid his identity and to keep himself warm. This will give mixed messages to the audience in the film introduction. It gives the impression that there is reason to wear scarf, possibility of disease or some other kind of danger.

Sound Research

Throughout our opening scene we choose to have sounds that are relevant to our theme and to create an thriller atmosphere. We also choose to have sounds to replace the dialogue which we didn't have present in our movie in order to make the movie more interesting when it is viewed by others.

The sounds that we will be using towards the end of the scene 2 (forest) is based on the film The Road soundtrack. This is because the music that is used is very effective which is what we wanted in our film to create a similar understanding and to get a similar impression of it when watching it.

Forest
We also wanted to use sounds that are based on some of the objects that will be present in our opening scene. The sounds listed below are going to be used to help set the scene as well as creating the atmosphere that we were going for.

  • Crackling of the fire
  • Wind Blowing
  • Crunching of leave or stick
Other sounds
There will be use of other sounds that we will be using while filming. These will be more to do with scene 1 (house/flashback) which are shown below.
  • Background noise from the T.V - This has been done by a Voice Over, Recorded and Voiced by me (Aneta) (One of the producers to our movie)
As a group we will choose the sounds which best fit with our theme and story itself to make sure that is effective as possible. We will download these off of a website that does non-copyright sounds and music or we may choose to make the sounds by ourself depending on what we all want and what would work best in order to succeed.

Audience and Marketing Research

Audience

We have looked at different age groups that would be best for our movie and we decided to rate it 15 +. We felt lthat the movie is aimed at this sort of age group and this is because it has an element of danger, blood and other scenes that are not present in our two minute sequence which little children below this age may find disturbing and very uneasy with it and therefore it should be best suited for this age. The reason we haven't rated it choosen the certificate to be any  lower or higher is because we believe 15 is in the middle of young adults but not children, also working best as teenagers at this stage have a understanding of the films that follow the same concept like our 2 minutes opening scene and they might find it a movie that appeals to them. We also have researched into many different films that were similar to our own and noticed that most of them were rated at 15 + and still had a great popularity.

Marketing

Marketing is all about introducing a movie to the speific audience in which the film is targeted at. I have looked at different movies and the way they have been introduced to the public eye, this is mostly via social network such as facebook, twitter and also MySpace. It isnt just this way in which films are broadcasted, but also by creating trailers, posters, billboards and in cinemas. As of this, we have created a poster for our 2 minutes opening which we hope will  appeal to our audience and engae them to want to go and watch the movie. We didn't just make a poster but we also chose to created a DVD cover which is there to show our idea and carry the message across for the audience while watching the opening.

Website Analysis

We have looked at the 'Team Incredible" blog which included all of their research, planning, evaluation and their final product. We had looked at it and decided to make our blog based on the one we had looked at, it inspired us in a way that it was laid out clearly in a way the information presented to the audience.
The group of this website was called 'Team Incredible' which was mentioned above, it presents the team work within the group.

  1. The group included a variety of headings in which we were able to clip on a view certain information, this made it more understandable which made us follow that concept for our own blog.
  2. Pictures we used to show different location, characters, props, costumes, dvd covers/posters. This made it look very interesting because we did not just have to concentrate on the writing but we had some visual aid to explain what they were talking about and what message they were trying to bring across.
  3. There was different used of colours used throughout the blog such us: yellow, green, purple, red and so on. This makes it look very appealing to the eye as it stands out to us, making it more pleasant to look at rather than having dull and boring colours which doesn't draw any attention to it. It also separates the different section which brakes up the blog so it doesn't look too crowded.
  4. the group have raised awareness of the project and advertised it by using social networking such as face-book , myspace and twitter. by doing this they have successfully gained popularity and allowed the audience who the movie was targeted at to give their own opinion and show their understanding of the movie and whole concept of it.
  5. The group kept everyone updated via their blog including information about any troubles they have had and any changes they have made to the blog/movie. This kept us informed and updated and at certain times and also gave us an idea of doing similar thing for our blog due to the fact that we faced similar problems which we need to talk about in our blog.
  6. Another good idea was when the group included their names on under the posts showing that they had done them and also the dates of the posts to show how often the blog was updated which showed us that they were hard working and that everyone contributed equally.
This is the linked of the blog that we have analysed above:

Technique Research

We have researched a lot of information about different genre movies before deciding what we wanted in our two minutes opening sequence. To do this we have used a range of resources from primary and secondary research including internet, magazines, books etc in order to find out as much as we could to include the information that we found in our movie so it will make sense and so it looks interesting.

  • Internet - we looked at specific industry websites to see what films they produced and distributed where they had in detail, information about the film. Another part of the internet in which we choose to carry out our research was Google.com, this is because this is a well known search engine which would be able to supply us with relevant information that we were able to use also some of the information were taken from the Wikipedia where we found allot of useful information.
  • Magazines - Such as the 'Hollywood Reporter' had a load of resources that we found relevant to our movie product. It contained articles that were interesting in explaining certain areas such as distribution industries and any other background information that was useful for our movie.
  • Books - We went to the BFI (Tottenham) where we could have a look at a number of books that had information about the many different genres. This made it easy to collect research that we could use in order to help us make a decision of what we would like our movie to be the there was a vast amount to select to read through making sure we got enough information which we could then apply to picking out what genre would be the best to use.

Industry and Titling Analysis

Industry

There are many industries in which we could class as institution and distributers for movies. Below is a list of a few different industries that many people may know quite well due to some previous popular films that they have made;
  1. DreamWorks  - This is a privately own organisation situated in America which was founded in October 1994 by three of the most well know producers which have created hit blockbuster movies, these people are: Steven Speilbergh, Jeffery Kenzenbergh and David Geffen. This organisation does not just make movies but they develop, produces and distribute  as well as video games and Television prgramming. Later on in the line, the organisation partnered off in order to make a more successful company with such industries as Paramount and then later on an Indian industry which brought a lot of money to the organisation. Now it is a well known industry which has made fils under the name of Antz, Shrek 1 and 2, Kung Fu Panda and more, as you can see from these names films they are all animated but they do not just specifically stick to this type of movie.
  2. Universal - This is an industry that is also situated in America founded in June 1912 by Carl Lealemmle, making it one of the oldest organisations to date. This too is a business that produces and distributes movies to countries all over the world. It soon became partners with an English film industry 'Working Title' where it wouldnt just distribute there own films, but also the ones in which 'Working Title' made. Some of the films that come under this industry are: Jaws, Jurassic Park, Back The Future. Films in which 'Working Title' made are: Love Actually, The Boat That Rocked, Three Weddings and a Funeral.
  3. 20th Century Fox - This American based industry was founded in 1915 by William Fox, it was then changed to the more well known name of 2oth Century Fox by Darrly F. Zanuck along with three other members that are not really known of to the public. This organisation did have a range of many different partners that joined into the company but it was still known as the famous 20th Century Fox.They have produced and distributed many films that are well known, some of them are: Avata, Star Wars, Night at the Museum, Home Alone, The Simpsons Movie. AS you can see it ranges from a list of animated films to ordinary movies.
Titling

When these sorts of organisations are going through the stages of editing, they include a number of people who worked on the many differnent sections of the film as credits/titles which show the aduience who have been involved and is some sort of recognistion for the people themselves. There can be a lot of names that come under the titling like the producer, director, actors, sound, editing, makeup and any other people that have played some part in the production of the movie, however some will come at the start which are the main ones whereas the less important ones will come at the end.

At the beginning
Production Company
Distribution Company
Starring (Actors/Actresses)
Producers
Director

At the end
Scriptwritter
Sound Team
Editing Team
Mak Up and Costume Team
Set Building Company

There are many more companies and teams are would be involved with the production of a team, but above is a short list of some of the titles that would be mentioned at the end of a film.

Genre Research

I have researched into many different genres to find out what kind of movies the audiences prefer the most and which ones are very popular. The results showed me that the thrill movies are very popular especially with teenagers as they like to watch something that brings excitement and at the same time is interesting rather than dull and boring.
Our opening sequence has been rated 15 + and therefore i have looked at the responses from people this age. It seems like they love a bit of thrill as they say there is something to talk about after they watched it. I was very pleased with the results that i found because this shows that our opening sequence might be as successful and viewed by many people as other thrill movies.

This is the genre i have looked at which is a triller. We decided to based our project on it as we thought it is very interesting and the plot is easy to create so the audience will be interested and wanted to watch it. I thought it links with what we wanted to do and the message we tried to bring across to the audience while watching it. Therefore we found The Dawn of the Dead  interesting and it helped us to create our piece of 2 minutes opening.

The road has a theme of post apocalyptic which is what we wanted in our movie in order to create the theme we aiming at. The scenes are very emotional and the movie really expresses the feelings that the characters go though.

9 Frame Analysis

At the beginning of the clip there are subheadings which are linked within the narrative of the storyline in order for the audience to get some understanding of the movie. Fast jump cats are used also with in the subheadings in order to fit loads of different images on the screen and show the story. Wide shot of the road where the cars are crashed and no human is present. This might be the connotation of how something happened or is about to happen because of the silence that is present however there is non diegetic sound used which is an action music suggesting the audience should look out as something is about to happen. The music then changes and the camera moves back and forwards to show the story of the two characters in the movie. The subheadings appear again. The camera pans from left to right to show the location the characters are in and the music changes again but this time it sounds like voice of hungry people.
The cuts are very fast so the story can fit and the audience can see the most interesting moments in a short period of time while watching this.

2 Opening Scene Analysis

28 Days Later
We have chose to look at the opening of 28 days later and base it on our 2 minutes opening because we thought it delivers a similar message across to the audience. However this is not the only opening we looked at. The other one is Dawn of The Dead which is analysed at the bottom.
The scene opens with a male character who moved forward in time as the title of the movie suggests 28 days later. He finds himself in the middle of the town where everything is smashed and destroyed on the floor. He is isolated and there is no presence of any human and this links with our opening scene as the character is also isolated. This is a perfect example of how we wanted our project to look like and interest our audience by creating a similar theme which links with this opening.
The camera uses different shots and angles such as the wide shot showing the character in the isolated place to show the area and situation that this character find himself in. The editing helps to create the meaning which is more clear for the audience when watching it such as fast cuts to show some action and the area where the main character is. There are subheadings used at the beginning of the scene along with the pictures to explain it a little more so the audience can  understand it and the message can be delivered to them.
There is diegetic and non diegetic sound used in the scene. Diegetic sound is when the man is shouting and the echo comes back right at him this suggest how he is alone at that time and there is no one to answer him back.  Non diegetic sound is used to create a meaning and set the atmosphere this is the music in the background played which was slow motion so the audience can feel like they are playing a part in the movie.
The mise- en -scene such as costume of the main character is a hospital clothing the connotation of it might be that that he might be mentally disturbed or that he just came out of the hospital.

Dawn of The Dead

Camera shots are used throughout the whole clip where we establish who the characters are and so we can tell the difference between the infected people and the normal surviving people. A number of different shots are used such as: medium shot (showing the characters), long shot (establishing the settings of which the film is bases, shopping mall, car park and what seems to be the Presidents house), close up (showing the facial expression of one particular character, representing the emotions of that character).
The clip was edited really well, by this i mean it was cut together very quickly so the shots are only seen for a very short period of time. This keeps the audience engaged with what is going on because of how interesting it appears to be. Also with the very quick editing it keeps up the fear, danger and tense elements building so that it reaches its peak which really grabs the audience to want to watch it. They also used 'Wipe Cuts' to cut from one place to another showing the difference in location to the viewers, this keeps the clip interesting as it isn't just the same sort of stuff over and over again, this is also shown by 'Jump Cuts' too.
Sound

Mise - En - Scene shows varied elements that make up this whole clip. From lighting, costume and make up, location and props.

  • Lighting, was quite dark in the clip shown above. This could show that it is getting later in to the evening time and that they have been there for quite some time, also showing that they may want it to be dark so that they are not properly seen by the diseased humans meaning that they are trying to hide.
  • Location/Setting are in two - three different places in the clip which are a car park, shopping mall and what looks to be the President of America's house. This shows the audience that they are located all around one particular area representing that they may not be able to escape or flee due to the infected people.
  • Costumes are similar in each character, casual wear. This shows that they may not have been planning to stay where they are (shopping mall) for a very long time as over a period of time we notice they are always wearing the same thing, and can also see this by the clothes getting dirty and full of the characters sweat. Each costume has a slight difference to show the personality of themselves. For example there is a character (President) wearing a suit, which suggests he is of a high authority to the country that is not just shown by his name but by his appearance too.
  • The Make up of the cast if very minimal as they do not really have much time to care about how they look due to the fact that they need to try and keep themselves alive and not eaten by the infected people. It is only really used just to highlight some of the characters features but due to sweating and being dirty it doesn't really matter if they were to wear a lot of it.
  • The main props that are used are guns, this shows that they are trying to protect themselves from being attacked. It also shows that they are thinking about their safety more importantly their own before the other members of the survival group. Other props are not really seen in the clip therefore i have only mentioned the gun.

Welcome

Welcome to Amanda and Aneta's coursework blog.
This blog is designed to show you the hard work that we have put into creating our opening sequence that lasts for two minutes.
It will consist of all the information, planning and research that we have carried out overall showing what we have learnt over the months of starting Media Studies. As well as showing the skills that we have gained in which we had to put in to use to make sure that our project was as successful as possible.
Have a look through the different pages we have created and enjoy.

I chose to do media because i wanted to see the factors that are involved in everyday life, such things as TV, Radio, Films and other exciting parts that come under this one subject. I have found it very interesting throughout the year that i have been here as i have learnt a range of new skills, the extra meanings to TV drama and how much hard work goes into planning, producing and developing a movie. Doing this project has been very stressful in trying to communicate with whole group and a whole lot of other issues, but i have very much enjoyed this project because it shows that i am able to work with a team and showed myself that i can create something that i never use to really think about.

I have chose media AS in order to learn all the exciting new things that come with it such as how to use the camera , produce a movie etc. Also media is surrounding us all the time in our everyday life so it was a great opportunity for me to find out more about it and gain new skills that i could use in the future that could be useful. Also i feel like media is the most powerful tool of communication. It helps promoting the right things on right time. It gives a real exposure to the mass audience about what is right or wrong therefore i wanted to learn more about it and be able to improve my understanding of it.
